You are also able to use HSA/FSA benefits to cover the cost of therapy.
Can't Afford Therapy?
If you are in need of free or low cost mental health services, you have options. If you can afford between $30-80 per session, Open Path Psychotherapy Collective is a great place to start. If you are in need of free mental health services and are located in the Twin Cities metro, Walk-In Counseling is an amazing organization that provides free, anonymous counseling by master's and doctoral level mental health practitioners, and has for the past 50 years!
Insurance and Out of Network Benefits
At this time, I am a private pay provider. I can provide you with an receipt to submit to your insurance company for possible out-of-network reimbursement. Please inquire with your insurance company for more details to find out if your plan offers reimbursement for out-of-network providers.
What are the benefits of not billing insurance?
Great question!
1. Using health insurance to pay for mental health counseling requires a diagnosis. Family conflict, grief and loss, moving into long-term care, etc., these are not diagnosable situations. And this is a good thing! We don't need to stigmatize some very normal, human experiences. It also means your insurance doesn't think they need to pay for you to get counseling. But many people find that support through those situations is helpful. Paying privately for services means that YOU are in the control of the care you need and with the therapist you get to decide how often to meet and for how long.
2. Your privacy is of utmost important to me. Unless you provide written permission for me to release your information, no insurance company will have record of your services. Also, this gives you the freedom to create a care plan that fits your lifestyle and your needs, without an insurance company influencing your decisions or limiting the number of covered sessions you can have. If you have any questions about this, please feel free to ask.
3. As a sole-proprietor small business / practice owner, accepting insurance is not part of a sustainable business model. The reimbursement rates and length of the time between providing services and receiving payment (sometimes upwards of 3 months!) is not a sustainable way of having a practice of this size. I intentionally set my rates to keep a small caseload because I want to offer the highest quality of care. Insurance companies often pay low rates causing therapists to take on large caseloads, which diminishes the quality of care for clients and results in burnout among therapists. Thank you in advance for understanding. As always, feel free to ask me if you have questions.
